Porsche Carrera GTS (904) Scan-to-CAD Reverse-Engineering & Geometry Extraction
Alongside a long-time faculty member of the Camosun Mechanical Engineering department and the Applied Research Coordinator at Camosun Innovates I’ve undertaken an exploratory project to determine the feasibility of creating a modern interpretation of the revered Porsche 904 using the Porsche 986 Boxster chassis as the underpinnings. The project started by 3D laser scanning a faithful European-crafted Porsche 904 replica and reverse-engineering the body panel surfaces and doing the same to a Porsche 986 Boxster. I am in charge of all 3D scanning, reverse-engineering, and design work for the project.
The project is still ongoing with the next steps being to split and extend the 904 body at the engine cover seam to lengthen the body. After that, the body panels will be adjusted to fit over the profile of the 986 & the windshield & roof structure modifications will be designed. Once the bodywork design is completed & adapted to the 986 chassis, CNC molds will be designed and machined from tooling foam before being sealed and finished to pull body panels from. Structural design for the roof, A-pillar, and rear window will then be completed & metal fabrication started. Finally, a custom windshield, rear window, and door windows will be manufactured & fitted to the fiberglass body panels.
